It's a book of zen, celebrating the beauty and imperfections of design and the designer. It's a practical book, dealing with team and client relationships, and the evolution of the discipline. Like the best punk rock songs, it's short, quick and states "Let's get on with it!"

It's a good quick read or a nice reference to have by your desk as you work and feel, 'Am I the only one who can call something brown that smells sh**!?" I'm not sure I would recommend it to a beginner but that's merely because some of what the author spits out is more than a little biased but I think that was his point. Perhaps some statements just need a bit more context - but then it wouldn't be a quick read. For example, unless you are extremely creative and convincing, a beginner does need to honor best practices I am afraid otherwise the start of a potentially great career could be doomed. I think it could use a few more concrete examples to support some points of view that are made(strongly). In summation it's well worth reading and like the author I have come through a similar treadmill minus the army/tank bit. So, I think most of what he's saying is starkly true. I would want every client, internal stakeholder and executive I have had to make presentations in front of over the last 16 years to read this.Product details

A lot of personal chatting of the author. Somewhat boring.
Being somewhat new to UX and UX design, I feel like this book should be required reading for all newcomers to the field. An awesome read for the UX veteran and novice alike.
Andrew takes the conventional, beaten path and tosses it aside. UX, design and workflow tips abound.

Heaton's purposely irregular reconciles two passions for many DIY attitudes and design. It inspires the reader with its personal anecdotes, practical thinking suggestions and even real-life techniques to apply in User Experience practice. It definitely fills a void in a community where mediocrity, complacency and vanity are ever lurking and opens a new path of discovery and innovation for many UX designers who feel the urge to "Rise Above".
Buzzwords are easy to toss around. And filling out templates precedes a calamity of sameness. But commitment, commitment is difficult to fake. Purposely Irregular cuts away the fat hanging off other industry books and dares/inspires/implores you to commit to the craft of UX. It is a book full of "why" instead of "how" - full of practical realities vs. obtuse generalities.
I found myself nodding my head in agreement throughout the entire book. For a short and squat little book it packs a ton of knowledge, punk ethos and punch.
I work as a web/interface designer and developer, but I have no formal design or UX training. This book fit me perfectly, because it explained how to practice UX in the practical context of making digital products and thinking about users. I also like the straightforward personality and attitude of the book - it has its own voice and challenges you to find your own as well. I would (and already have!) recommended this book to every designer and developer I know to help them understand the role of UX and what approaching it in a creative way can accomplish.
The best book I've read on experience design...but it encompasses so much more as well. I literally read this on a plane, and I used some of the ideas in the book with a client right after I landed.
Here's some of my favorite quotes and sections to reference while reading
- If content doesn't have an action associated with it, give serious thought as to why it's there and what value it's providing your users. (p.83)
- We've crowded the good stuff out with options the user has already chose not to do....We've limited the content the user has asked to see. (p.89-90)
- When you pitch, make it an event.
- What you present is always good, in whatever state it's in. Believe the beginning of brilliance is as important as the end. (p.99)
If UX is important to your projects and your clients (hint that should be everyone doing anything that a user touches), just one concept from this book will easily pay for itself.
I read this book on my on the bus, which was as the author intended. A quick read that uses humor and years of experience and wisdom in UX to help save you a lot of the trouble that he went through to get there. I felt inspired and empowered when I read it. It made me want to jump off the bus and go MAKE something. And though I'm not in a UX position where I work, it helped me to understand the people around me that I'm dealing with a lot better. The good, the bad and the ugly. Some passages I read over and over again because they spoke to me so loudly. Good design is not about just doing what somebody else did, but just a little bit better. It's about transcending what has been done before and providing the thing people didn't realize that they wanted. And that is a beautiful thing. This book helps you to get there. To start thinking like that. And that alone can be the beginning of a revolution.
